For my alternative to a book report I chose to utilize prompt number 3 form the book report ideas article that we were given by Dr. Kajder. Listed below is the original prompt as well as my modified instructions and my attempt at doing the prompt.

  1. Create a childhood for a character. If your main character is an adult, try to figure out what he or she would have been like as a child. Write the story of his or her childhood in such a way that shows why he or she is the way he or she is in the novel.

After having read Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice and all of the characters being adults. I want you (the student) to choose either Elizabeth Bennet or Mr. Darcy (if you wish to use another character from the story please let me know) and write for that character a childhood. Please create your story of the character’s childhood in a way that would give us as the reader reasons as to why they act the way that they as an adult.

Elizabeth Bennet was an out spoken opinionated child much to her father’s dismay. Not that Mr. Bennet minded his daughter speaking her mind he himself had his moments of forthrightness. However, Elizabeth usually said what she believed in a way that left her father perplexed. All of his daughters where outspoken particularly Lydia who is now five but Elizabeth was different. Just the other day after one of the neighborhood boys had pulled her braided hair. Since that incident it was almost as if she held a sort of prejudice for the boy for doing her an injustice. Mr. Bennet shook his head as he noticed from his study window as Elizabeth gave the boy a rather nasty look as he walked by with the other boys.
