So Friday February 19th was my first day in my ESOL placement school. I am working with middle school students, mainly 6th and 7th grade. As it was my first day my mentor teacher had me observe to get a feel for the class and the students. The 7th grade class was first and at 8:30 am it is a rather hard class not only because of the time but also because most of the students are not interested in learning the material. My mentor teach pointed out to me who the ESOL student were (as that is the main reason I am in her classroom) so that way over the coming weeks I would know who I would be working with.
Then the 6th grade class came in and they started working on a research paper that they had due the next week. I sat next to a student that had no interest in working in his paper but instead wanted to talk. He told me about how much snow he had gotten a few weeks before that, how he was a Florida Gators fan (I was wearing a UGA sweatshirt) because that is where he is originally from, and then proceeded to tell me that he had had three concussions in the past year.
After that it was time for lunch and that ended my first day at the middle school.
