After giving feedback on a peer’s work I found it much easier than I first anticipated. I dreaded doing the assignment for days. Simply because I didn’t feel that I would have anything insightful to offer my partner. I realized though that this is something that I am going to have to work though in order to be a teacher that can give thoughtful feedback to my future students.
One of the things that stood out to me out to me the most in this weeks reading was in the chapter by Penny Kittle. She talked about the hang up that students have with receiving a letter grade and how that can affect their belief in the piece. Ms. Kittle goes on to say that as teachers we need to give feed back that matters and is thoughtful more than a letter grade. I think that some teachers get caught up on the letter grade to show if they themselves and student is doing what they are supposed to do. When really the the whole point of teaching writing to help students build their confidence in themselves and their own writing.
I learned through this assignment that even though it may not always be easy to do I need to find it in myself to give feedback that matters to my students. Particularly feedback that will help them grow as a writer.
